How to Create Custom Video Templates In Repurpose

Templates in Repurpose let you define the look and size of your videos — including titles, captions, and layouts — while automatically resizing content for each platform. Use them to turn horizontal videos into vertical or square videos that stay consistent, branded, and ready to publish anywhere.

Watch the tutorial video below to see the templates in action, step by step.

Step 1 — Access Templates

  1. Go to your Repurpose.io dashboard.
  2. Click Templates in the left-hand menu.
  3. On this page, you can either:
  • Start from one of the Predefined Templates by clicking Predefined Templates — great for quickly customizing an existing layout.
  • Or create one completely from scratch using the Create New Template button.

Templates work for both video-to-video and audio-to-video workflows — so whether you’re repurposing a YouTube video, a Facebook Live, or a podcast episode, you can design a fully branded layout for it.

You can now design fully customizable templates for Audio to Video workflows. Learn more here.

Step 2 — Choose Type and Format

When creating a new template, you’ll first select what type of content the template will be used for:

  • 🎥 Video to Video → to repurpose an existing video into another video platform.
  • 🎧 Audio to Video → to turn your podcast episodes or audio clips into videos with visuals, captions, and backgrounds.

After that, choose the aspect ratio or format that best fits your destination platform:

  • Square (1:1) — best for Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn feeds
  • Vertical (9:16) — ideal for Reels, TikToks, and Shorts
  • Horizontal (16:9) — for long-form content

Step 3 — Design the Template

Each template is made up of visual elements you can add, arrange, and customize to define the final look of your videos. You can freely drag, resize, and style each item to match your brand and layout preferences. Here are the elements you can use:

  • Headline → Dynamic text automatically replaced with your video’s title or clip name when published.Note: You can adjust its position, and style while designing, but you can’t edit the text itself — it’s auto-filled when publishing.
  • Sub-headline → Optional secondary line that behaves like the headline — you can’t edit it in the template, but you can edit it at publish time for each specific video.
  • Static Text → Custom text field you can edit directly in the template.Unlike the headline, static text remains fixed and editable inside the template editor.
  • Captions Placeholder → Defines where captions or subtitles will appear.
  • Progress Bar → A visual timeline that shows video progress; you can change its color, style, and position.
  • Shapes, Emojis & Overlays → Decorative or branding elements you can add to highlight areas or match your visual identity.
  • Background → Choose a solid color, upload your own image, or import a design from Canva.

Every element can be dragged, resized, and styled either by clicking on it once it’s on the canvas, or right after adding it, since it’s automatically selected by default.

Step 4 — Save and Apply Templates to Workflows

Once your template looks exactly how you want it:

  1. Click the “X” in the top-right corner of the editor to close it.This automatically saves all your changes and takes you back to the main Templates page.
  2. Next, go to the Workflow where you want to use this template.
  3. Open the Settings (gear icon - top right).
  4. Inside the workflow settings, you’ll find two template options:
    • Predefined Templates → choose from Repurpose.io’s ready-made designs.
    • My Templates → select one of the custom templates you created in your account.
  1. Choose the one you prefer.
  2. Click Save.

From now on, every video or audio processed by that workflow will automatically use your selected template — including its size and design.

Step 5 — Preview and Publish

When publishing a video, there are two ways templates are applied depending on how your workflow is set up:

🔁 Automatic Publishing

If your workflow is in automatic mode, the selected template will be applied automatically to every new video published through that workflow.

All your clips will inherit the same layout, colors, captions, and format without requiring any manual action — ideal for keeping your content fully consistent across platforms.

🕹️ Manual Publishing

  1. If you publish manually using the Schedule button (found to the right of each video inside a workflow), you’ll first see a preview of how the template looks applied to that specific clip. From this preview window, you can:
  • Adjust the position of elements (title, captions, progress bar, etc.)
  • Modify font sizes or styles

Note: Any changes made here apply only to that specific video — they do not update or modify the main template for future videos.

  1. Once you're happy with the preview, click Publish now or Schedule to complete the post.
